Laser eye surgery

Laser eye surgery

With the question of Dr. Muhammad Hantira, an honorary assistant professor, ophthalmology department, Umm Al-Qura University, Saudi Arabia
About laser eye surgery, explain the following to us: -

 Operation goal:
Laser eye surgery by "robotic lamellar keratoplasty" is a surgical technique that is used to correct visual impairment in people with severe nearsightedness or moderate farsightedness.

 Dr. Hantereh noted:
Today, laser eye corneal surgery is not performed according to "robotic lamellar keratoplasty" as a routine procedure, due to the possibility of obtaining precisely predictable results through other methods of operations aimed at correcting visual impairment.

 process:
 Dr. Hantira explained:
Laser corneal surgery is performed under local anesthesia and it usually takes less than one hour.
A partial incision is made in the cornea, and while one end is still attached, the cut piece is gently folded up, in order to expose the layer of tissue underneath.
After that, the surgeon cuts the sub-corneal layer precisely, relying on the "eyeglass report" of the same person, which shows his vision deficiency.
After that, the cornea is folded again and its tissue is returned to its place, where it is supposed to heal and fuse automatically with the surrounding tissues.

 Advantages of laser corneal surgery

Compared to other vision correction surgeries:

 • Recovery from laser corneal surgery is relatively very fast.
 • It takes a shorter time to restore vision stability.
 • The post-operative recovery period is considered relatively comfortable.

  Disadvantage of laser corneal surgery

Although laser corneal surgery is relatively safe and very effective, this does not preclude the presence of some drawbacks besides the advantages mentioned above.  Among these negatives:

 • For people with slight to moderate nearsightedness, laser corneal surgery is less accurate than other eye operations.  That is, the result that can be obtained is not predictable in advance.

 • Laser corneal surgery may lead to a slight increase in the risk and risk of developing astigmatism.
