Medical optometry

Medical optometry is the specialty that studies the eye and vision from an optical point of view.  Functional assessment and evaluation of vision are indispensable for a good visual diagnosis, so the optometry unit occupies an important place in the multidisciplinary ophthalmology team.

And with the question of Dr. Hanatera – Honorary Assistant Professor – Department of Ophthalmology – Umm Al-Qura University – Saudi Arabia
Explain that the optometry unit consists of all the optometrists in Dr. Hantereh’s clinic.

This unit is divided into several dependent units.
-    Optometry: a vision correction study includes assessing visual acuity, calculating dioptre scores at all far, middle and near distances, without neglecting the impairment of eye movement (motilidad) and vision of the eyes (binocular).

-    Instrument Optics: The application of multiple instruments discovered in recent years has become essential for modern diagnosis and tracking of eye diseases and the entire visual system.

-    Retinal, optic nerve and corneal studies have evolved significantly, and retinal imaging, fluorescein angiography and optical coherence tomography are of essential benefit in important diseases such as diabetic retinopathy or age-related macular degeneration.

-    It is also applied in conjunction with imaging tomography of the optical nerve, computer-computed visual field measurement, which is indispensable in diagnosing and tracking glaucoma and many diseases of the eye nerves.

-    The technique of corneal study (topography of the front face and the back face) is essential for the preoperative study and evaluation of the results of corneal vision correction surgery (LASIK). Endoscopic microscopy of the cornea allows the analysis of the corneal membrane layer of the tissue responsible for the corneal transparency.

-    Cataract surgery requires a prior study of the optics to determine the gradient of the lens inside the eye that gets the best eye focus after surgery.  It is called Biometría and it is also responsible for the medical optometry unit.

-    Contact lens subunit
Responsible for contact lens matching and expertise in complex cases such as keratoconus and corneal transplantation

-    Children’s optometry has extensive experience in treating strabismus, visual deficits and eye motions in school age.

-    Finally, the visual acuity subunit, which is applied to children but also to adults, not only works for people to have the quality of visual acuity, but to gain the ability to fully use their vision in an efficient and comfortable manner.
