Laser eye surgery
The laser eye surgery is a surgical procedure that is performed using laser beams according to the method (LTK - Laser Thermo Keratoplasty), in order to eliminate the use of glasses. It is considered a relatively new technology aimed at correcting the ability to see.
People who suffer from visual disturbances, such as farsightedness and astigmatism, who often use glasses or contact lenses, seek this procedure as an alternative way to improve and correct their vision, rather than using any other optical devices.
And what appears clearly by the name of the operation: LTK is a surgery in which the cornea is changed using laser beams.
To our question, Dr. Muhammad Hantira - Assistant Professor of the Ophthalmology Department - Umm Al-Qura University - Saudi Arabia
He stressed that preparations for the LTK eyeglasses removal process require an initial consultative meeting during which it is made sure that the patient does not suffer from diseases that may prevent him from undergoing this operation, and the reasons that led him to decide to perform this type of operation are examined.
process:
Dr. Hantira explained That after instilling the material to dilate the pupil, a local anesthetic is also instilled into the eye.
In the next stage, Dr. Hantereh directs thin laser beams towards the cornea without making an incision or any change of the corneal location.
The laser beams change the angle of the cornea, so that the rays of light entering and falling into the eye can reach more accurately the retinal tissue at the bottom of the eye.
In this way, the vision disturbances resulting from the mismatch between the image produced in the cornea of the eye, and the resulting image on the surface of the retina (which is transmitted through the optic nerve fibers to the brain for analysis) are corrected. This process takes no more than a few minutes.
Ocular risks in laser eye surgery
- Dry eyes - this can be overcome by using appropriate eye drops.
- Sensitivity to light - this phenomenon is expected to continue for a short period (up to a month) after surgery.
Post-operative stage
Dr. Hanatira confirmed That after laser eye surgery, the patient is released to his home on the same day of the operation, but it is recommended that he rest for several hours.
One of the things that must be taken into consideration is that laser eye surgery to remove glasses does not have long-term or permanent results. Vision disturbances are likely to return over a period of time.
